What are Your Boundaries?

At times Nurses struggle with enforcing boundaries. What are your boundaries, anyways?

I mean… people NEED us, and as Nurses people are accustomed to us helping, supporting, GIVING of ourselves.

It can sometimes feel foreign for you to say NO… Uncomfortable.

No thank-you. Not today. I have plans already, I can’t do that. That doesn’t feel right, or any of the other statements you could say to release you from that ‘thing’ that isn’t serving you now.

It’s OK Until It’s Not OK.

I understand. It’s OK, until it’s not OK. Only you will know when it it isn’t OK.

Sometimes it takes a loooong time before you realize you want to, need to, MUST do what is best for yourself, and establish boundaries.

You have it in yourself to do what is best for you.

In todays blog, Nurse Jill shares a small snippet of her journey to realizing her limitations and recognizing her boundaries.

Jill’s Story about Boundaries

Here’s Jill’s story.

Jill Arzouman went into Nursing since it had so many opportunities while raising a family.

39 years later, she is still a Nurse!

Jill says we need to take steps to prevent burnout now, more than ever or the healthcare system will collapse, and so will we.

She shares her reality in the following story, and how small steps can get you back on track...

Jill says,

"At work, I was assigned an impossible task with minimal resources. I’m a self-care believer, but I fell off the wagon.

The job (and I) had me working 7 days a week and holidays, all at the expense of my family and my mental health.

I found myself standing in the kitchen screaming regularly to myself and crying.

I wanted to walk away from nursing (after 39 years)!

I made a promise to myself, made a wellness calendar, and checked off every day. Meditate, yoga, run, lift, be nice to someone etc.

Through this, I discovered and reaffirmed how much power we have to heal ourselves and then others!"

Baby steps…I have the power to make a difference in the world of Nursing. Provision 5 of the ANA Code of Ethics - we have the same duty to Self as Others.
